ABSTRACT

Although mediatisation deals with long-term cultural transformations in and through media, we can pinpoint specific media events that cause more radical changes than others. This chapter discusses the television series Scenes from a Marriage as an example of this. Reception research illustrates how love representations intertwine with sociocultural definitions of love and how these are co-constituted in people’s narratives when making sense of their viewing and their everyday life. The case study further illustrates how specific media events disrupt people’s lives, allowing us to see a clearer image of the mediatisation of love.
