Moving up: Publishing strategies for career advancement in the Academy

Professional advancement in the Academy generally requires accumulating publishing credits. But what publishing projects yield the greatest benefit? How can faculty, especially faculty early in their careers, make best choices about how they invest their energies in publishing projects to maximize the positive impact on their careers? This session will provide guidance from a mix of faculty and administrators on how to “publish and flourish” on your career path. Topics will include smart strategies for article and book publications, pros and cons of editing and contributing to multi-contributor edited volumes, and potential career related implications of open access, born digital, and crossover/trade projects.

Chair: Jamie F. Chriqui is Senior Associate Dean and Professor of health policy and administration in the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She also directs Health Policy Research for the Institute for Health Research and Policy at UIC and has served as co-chair of the UIC Campus Promotion & Tenure committee since 2020.

Panelists:

Stephanie Y. Crawford is Executive Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs & Strategic Initiatives and professor in the Department of Pharmacy Systems, Outcomes and Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy. She holds a joint appointment as professor in the Department of Medical Education, is an Honors College Fellow, and is an affiliate faculty member in the UIC Center for Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomic Research.

Julie Greene is Professor of history at the University of Maryland. She is the author of several books, including the award-winning title The Canal Builders: Making America's Empire at the Panama Canal, and is a series editor for The Working Class in American History series, published by the University of Illinois Press.

Amanda E. Lewis is the Director of the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy and College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Distinguished Professor of Black studies and sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is the author of several award-winning books including, with co-author Jon Diamond, Despite the Best Intentions: Why Racial Inequality Persists in Good schools.

Crossing over: Strategies for pursuing careers in publishing If you are considering a lateral move from the Academy to publishing, this session is for you. Scholarly publishing offers a multitude of “academic adjacent” career alternatives that capitalize on an academic background while offering opportunities to develop different skill sets. In this session, diverse publishing professionals will share their paths, points of entry, and the work their past and current positions entail. This session also provides practical advice about building a publishing resume, identifying opportunities, and getting your foot in the door, as well as insights about what search committees in publishing are looking for.

Chair: Alison Syring, an acquisitions editor at the University of Illinois Press, acquiring books in history, religion, regional studies, and digital humanities. She has previous publishing experience working as an associate production editor, technical writer, and freelance editor and proofreader, in addition to internships at a literary agency, independent trade publisher, and scholarly publishers. She has bachelor’s degrees in English literature and history, an MA in writing, and an MFA in fiction writing from the University of Illinois.

Panelists:

Angela Burton is intellectual property manager at the University of Illinois Press. Previous positions include managing editor at Indiana University Press and senior editor (manuscript editorial) at the University of Illinois Press. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and an MA in history from the Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where she is also ABD.

Claire Eder is production coordinator at University Press of Kentucky. Previously she served as marketing specialist and interim journals production manager at University of Wisconsin Press. She is a published poet and holds an MFA from the University of Florida and a PhD from Ohio University, both in Creative Writing--Poetry.

Jermey Matthews is senior acquisitions editor for physical sciences, engineering, and mathematics at The MIT Press. Previously he served as industry reporter and book reviews editor for Physics Today and the American Institute of Physics. He holds PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Maryland.
