Aims & Scope

The Journal of Alternative & Community Media is an international journal publishing high-quality, peer-reviewed research.

The journal aims to highlight and promote the study of alternative and community media and communication, which includes citizens′ media, participatory media, activist and radical media and the broader forms of communication that these groups might undertake. The journal locates this scholarship within the media and cultural research disciplines.

This field of study continues to grow and demonstrates increasing relevance in the digital age. The Journal of Alternative & Community Media recognizes the need for strong empirical and theoretical advances which help explain the shifting media environment, and the ways in which people use alternative forms of media and communication. Issues of concern to the journal include but are not limited to the nature and distribution of media power; access to and participation in media; media practices of communities and social movements; diverse objectives, practices and structures within alternative and community media; state support and media regulation; and the possibilities of emerging technologies and new media.

The Journal of Alternative & Community Media will define the field, present exciting, new research and advance the study of alternative and community media around the world.

The journal seeks submissions from international authors conducting quality, rigorous research. All articles are subject to the highest standards of peer review under the guidance of an international Editorial Advisory Board, comprised of leaders in the field.

All articles submitted should be original work and must not be under consideration by other publications. 

Journal contributors will receive a free PDF copy of their final work upon publication. Print copies of the journal may also be purchased by contributors at half price.

Peer Review Policy

All articles undergo initial editorial screening either by the journal's Editorial Team and/or incumbent Guest Editors. Articles then undergo a rigorous anonymous peer review by two referees, following the guidance in Intellect's 'Peer review instructions'. Based on this feedback, the Editors will communicate a decision and revision suggestions to authors. To appeal an editorial decision, please contact the main Editor who will consider your case.

The journal follows the principles set out by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Read our Ethical Guidelines for more on the journal's standards.

General Call for Papers

The Journal of Alternative and Community Media continues to seek submissions from authors conducting quality, rigorous research that advances knowledge about the history and contemporary theory and practice of alternative, community and activist media and communication forms. 

JOACM adheres to a rigorous double-blind peer review policy in which the identity of both the reviewer and author are always concealed from both parties. Manuscripts should be submitted free of identifying features including authors’ names and affiliations. The full name of each author with current affiliation and contact details plus a short biographical note should be supplied in the cover letter. 

Please follow the Intellect Style Guide when preparing your manuscript for submission. Manuscripts of 6000–8000 words including notes and references will be accepted for review.

Manuscripts should contain, in the following order:

  1. title page with full title and subtitle (if any);
  2. abstract of 100-150 words;
  3. 6–8 keywords;
  4. main text with each new paragraph indented;
  5. numbered end notes;
  6. alphabetical references section using the Harvard system.

Please send an electronic copy in an editable format (eg .doc) via the Submit link on the homepage.

Please include with every submission a covering letter confirming that all authors have agreed to the submission and the article is not being considered for publication by any other journal. Please zip all content together and upload as one file.

Book review submissions are also welcome.

Peer review process

  • Double-blind peer review. 

  • All articles received will be reviewed by the editor for suitability; and if suitable will be distributed to TWO blind peer reviewers. 

  • Please allow six weeks for peer reviews to be completed, following which time authors will be notified of the outcome of their paper.

  • If revisions are required, an additional 6 weeks will be given to complete revisions or a longer period of revision time can be negotiated with the editor. 

  • All peer reviews are conducted strictly in confidence and anonymously. Peer reviewers will be recruited based on their expertise in the field covered by the submitted article, with members of the journal’s Editorial Advisory Board acting regularly as peer reviewers.

  • The Journal of Alternative and Community Media is published by Intellect Books with support from the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) Community Communication and Alternative Media section and the Griffith Centre for Social and Cultural Research.
