About Intellect

Intellect is a fiercely independent academic publisher for scholars and practitioners teaching and researching in the arts, media and creative industries.

Best known for our work in the visual and performing arts, we provide publishing services in many subject areas, backed by over 30 years of steady growth, and a reputation for excellence in design and production.

Publishers of original thinking

We champion authors of original work with an international perspective and look to encourage and support critical debate in new and emerging subject areas. Our emphasis is on quality and scholarly integrity rather than simple marketability and rigorous peer review is central to our publishing process.

Protecting authenticity

As a ‘mission-driven’ publisher, our commitment is to continuous re-investment in the activities we believe in, and to upholding the independence and ethical standards that attract and benefit our authors, editors and readers in such vital ways.

To support this, we enjoy a robust international distribution arrangement with like-minded partners such as the University of Chicago Press, Turpin Distribution and Footprint.

What makes Intellect unique?

Exponents of unfiltered expression

We promote forward-thinking, debate-sparking content in its purest form – free from any ideological interference or agenda.

Supporters of emerging subject areas

Intellect is best known for its work in visual and performing arts, cultural and media studies, fashion, and sub-categories such as photography, gender studies, community music, gaming and scenography. Intellect titles also often present work that straddles disciplines and defies traditional definitions.

Advocates of our authors

Intellect places great emphasis on fostering and serving its ever-growing international community, by transforming ideas and research into books and journals fit for a demanding global audience.

Pioneers of design

Intellect is committed to creativity, innovation and excellence – achieved in close collaboration with authors and editors. We have a team of experienced designers creating publications that are both beautiful and accessible, and excellent print partners who uphold our very high standards.

The Intellect story

Founded in 1984 by the late Masoud Yazdani, Intellect published its first journal, Artificial Intelligence Review, in 1986.

Since then, Intellect has maintained steady expansion and improvement, and a steadfast commitment to giving exposure to new and emerging subject areas. Today, we publish over 100 journals and around 100 books each year, and employ 23 staff members. We have a US office, attend international conferences, and enjoy partnerships with the University of Chicago Press, Turpin Distribution, Ingenta and NBNi.

Supporting the community

Intellect has run a successful intern scheme for many years, encouraging bright young minds from across the UK and further afield to benefit from the Intellect experience.

In addition to our on-going internship scheme, we are delighted to be supporting our local students by participating in the 2022 Strive Internship programme in partnership with Hargreaves Lansdown. The Strive Internship aims to offer up to 75 paid internships to Black, Asian and minority ethnic university students living or studying in the West of England. Further information on what the pilot programme achieved in 2021 is available in the impact report.

We believe in job fulfilment within a supportive working culture and promote a healthy work/life balance. We also encourage all our staff to contribute to our local community through volunteering in a reading scheme, donating to food banks, holding charity bake sales, or taking part in sponsored runs, for example!
