The Global Alliance is governed by a Chair and Secretariat, currently housed at UNICEF on interim basis. It is an umbrella body designed to bring together a group of associations, networks and organisations that share common principles and goals related to the vision and mission of the Alliance, and who wish to work together to address common priority areas to accelerate development and social change.
The Alliance represents organisations and institutions that use a variety of approaches related to social and behaviour change, including communication for development, media for development, community engagement and participation, programme communication, access to and freedom of information, entertainment education, social marketing, and other related strategies
The Alliance was launched in 2018 when a number of organisations from around the world who are leaders these fields came together at the International Social and Behaviour Change Communication Summit in Nusa Dua, Indonesia.
