Open Access Articles

De Gruyter is committed to expanding access to first-class knowledge and has fostered a high-quality journal program. We offer open access publishing options across our fully open access and hybrid journals covering all disciplines – from science, technology, and medicine to the humanities and social sciences.

Why choose De Gruyter to publish your open access article

  • All our open access articles are published under Creative Commons licenses and author retain copyright. We encourage the use of CC-BY license, but our authors are able to choose more restrictive CC licenses if they wish to prevent the commercial use and adaption in new works.
  • All our open access articles undergo single or double-blind peer review prior to publication.
  • All our open access articles benefit from a fast turnaround time from manuscript submission to online publication on degruyter.com.
  • All our open access articles are indexed by relevant Abstracting and Indexing services.
  • We offer funding support to our authors and take care to be fully compliant with open access mandates worldwide.
  • We have institutional agreements in place that allow authors to publish open access articles at no cost at all – or with a significant discount.

Fully Open Access journals

De Gruyter is home to over 100 fully open access journals across STEM and HSS disciplines.

For most of our fully open access journals, we apply an article processing charge (APC) to cover the publication costs. The level of the APC depends on the journal and can be checked on our Article Processing Charges (APCs) page.

However, as funding might be an obstacle to getting your research out to the world, we offer a waiver policy for each journal.

We also publish a growing number of open access journals that are fully funded, resulting in no direct charges for our authors.

Using the Subscribe to Open model, De Gruyter is also piloting an alternative transformation path for its humanities and social sciences portfolio that does not require authors to pay article processing charges.

Hybrid Open Access Journals

Authors have the option to publish their articles under an open access license in almost all of our 340 subscription-based journals.

The standard article processing charge for a hybrid open access article is 2,000 Euro (plus VAT if applicable). Please note that corresponding authors from institutions with which we have a transformative agreement, can publish in open access without paying the fee. More information on the eligible institutions and articles can be found on our Funding & Support page.

How to publish your article in open access

Fully open access journals for which APCs apply:
