About the Journal
Focus and Scope
The journal seeks to create an international and transdisciplinary forum for the investigation of user-generated cultural production and user-driven cultural participation across a variety of social fields and platforms, e.g. urban spaces, aesthetic co-productions and online environments.
The overall focus is to explore the socially transformative and democratic potential of cultural participation processes, to qualify the academic understanding of what ‘cultural participation’ is and what it involves, and to discuss the complex relations created between user-generated material and established institutions.
We invite submissions from a variety of disciplinary fields such as media and communication studies, cultural studies, cultural geography, aesthetics, science and technology studies, health care, information science, sociology, anthropology, and gender studies.
The journal is published once or twice every year.
Peer Review Process
Conjunctions. Transdisciplinary Journal of Cultural Participation has a 'double blind' peer review procedure. The editors of each issue moderate and supervise the review process, and authors are able to follow each step of it.
Peer reviewers are given four weeks to complete the review.
Peer reviewers are asked to give their opinion on a number of issues pertinent to the scientific and formal aspects of a paper, and to judge the papers on grounds on originality and urgency.
Peer reviewers are asked to answer the following questions:
- Is the paper original and relevant for the research area?
- Is the argumentation convincing and coherent?
- Is the paper well structured?
- Is the paper reader-friendly?
- Does the paper follow formal guidelines (e.g. reference system, word limit)?
Peer reviewers will have four possible options for recommendations
- Accept manuscript (no need for revision)
- Accept after (minor or major) revisions (accepted if the author makes the requested revisions)
- Revise and resubmit (the paper will be sent for another peer review round)
- Reject manuscript
Paper may also be rejected directly by the editors if judged to be out of scope or sub-standard.
To facilitate rapid publication, authors are given a maximum of six weeks for revision.
Open Access Policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Journal History
Conjunctions. Transdisciplinary Journal of Cultural Participation was launched in 2013 in the wake of the conference RETHINK Participatory Cultural Citizenship. The conference provided a site for the development and discussion of the journal’s key theoretical concept: cultural participation.
Through the focus on participation Conjunctions. Transdisciplinary Journal of Cultural Participation provides a focused publication site. By publishing an article with us your work is inscribed in a specific research area and widely disseminated globally through our open access system.
