Abstract

This article offers a brief overview of some of the ethical challenges raised by artificial intelligence (AI), in particular machine learning and data science, and summarizes and discusses a number of challenges for near-future regulation in this area. This includes the difficulties of moving from principles to more concrete measures and problems with implementing ethics by design and responsible innovation.

Author Biography

Mark Coeckelbergh, University of Vienna

Prof. Dr. Mark Coeckelbergh is a full Professor of Philosophy of Media and Technology at the Philosophy of Department of the University of Vienna and the President of the Society for Philosophy and Technology (SPT). His expertise focuses on ethics and technology, in particular robotics and artificial intelligence. He is currently a member of various entities that support policy building in the area of robotics and artificial intelligence, such as the European Commission’s High Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence and the Austrian Council on Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. He is the author of 9 philosophy books and numerous articles, and is involved in several European research projects on robotics (e.g. DREAM, INBOTS).
