This paper considers the use of the concept of hybridity in journalism studies, arguing that the ... more This paper considers the use of the concept of hybridity in journalism studies, arguing that the concept of hybridity has served an important role in reorienting the field in the face of important processes of social change, but that as a "sensitizing concept" in the sense that Herbert Blumer used the term, it requires critical reflection and more careful specification of its various uses. In the first sections, we map three principal contexts in which the concept has been invoked: one focusing on new media and the blurring of professional boundaries it produces; one focusing on global flows of journalism culture, and a third which treats hybridity not as a novel but as quotidian and rooted in the structural context of the practice of journalism in general. The second part of the paper focuses on issues and challenges in the use of the concept of hybridity. We consider the tendency for hybridity to become a catch-all phrase that substitutes for more specific analysis, and the problem of treating novel phenomena as derivative forms of familiar ones. We then move to critique "presentism" in the discussion of hybridity and the distortions that result from drawing dichotomies between hybrid and "pure" forms, making the argument for taking seriously the idea that hybridity is universal. In the final section, we propose the idea of the hybridity cycle as a way of thinking about stability and change in journalism studies.

This study joins the emerging de-Westernization discourse within communication studies and empiri... more This study joins the emerging de-Westernization discourse within communication studies and empirically compares the diversity of Ibero-American, Western, and regional journals at three different levels: authorship, editorial board membership, and citations. Our findings show that through low geopolitical diversity and high regional shares in authorship, editorial board membership, and citations, the Ibero-American region uses its structural, linguistic, and cultural resources to offer an alternative universe to mainstream English-based communication research. The article argues that the process of trailblazing the pathways to de-Westernizing communication scholarship is best accomplished when it is actively led by peripheral regions.

We identified the most frequently used types of sources, their evolution over time, and the differences between the various social media platforms used by the Chilean media during the pandemic. Specifically, we extracted 838,618 messages published by Chilean media on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter between January and December 2020. An initial machine learning (MA) process was applied to automatically identify 168,250 messages that included keywords that link their content to Covid-19. Based on a list of 2,130 entities, another MA process was used to apply a set of rules based on the appearance of declarative verbs or common expressions used by the media when citing a source, and the use of colons or quotation marks to detect the presence of different types of sources in the news content. Based on a content analysis of 33,640 news stories from the Journalistic Role Performance project... more Based on a content analysis of 33,640 news stories from the Journalistic Role Performance project, this paper analyzes how civic, service and infotainment roles connect with thematic beats and vary across media organizations and cultures. We examine differences in role performance across politics, economics, crime, social affairs, court, and miscellaneous news beats in print news from 64 media outlets in 18 countries. Our study sheds light on the multiple ways in which thematic beats define the performance of audience-oriented roles in the news across countries. We offer multiple insights into how thematic beats are shaped by national journalistic cultures and news organizations' structural characteristics, with media audience orientation and ownership strongly affecting this relationship. Considering the factors at play, we propose a typology of news beats regarding their relationship to audiences.

Se identificaron los tipos de fuentes más utilizados, su evolución en el tiempo, así como las diferencias encontradas entre distintas plataformas de redes sociales de los medios chilenos. Específicamente, se extrajeron 838.618 publicaciones de medios nacionales desde Facebook, Instagram y Twitter entre enero y diciembre de 2020. A ese corpus se aplicó un primer proceso de machine learning (MA) para filtrar automáticamente 168.250 publicaciones que incluían palabras claves que identifican su contenido con el Covid-19. The authors analyze the interaction and cooccurrence of the interventionist, watchdog, loyal-facilitator, service, civic, and infotainment roles. The results show three main types of role co-occurrence-interventionist-watchdog, watchdog-civic, and interventionist-infotainment-from which intermediate roles emerge. The findings also shed light on the influence of organizational structures, journalistic routines, and local contexts on the interaction of different roles in professional practice.

Based on the content analysis of 1,400 Twitter and Instagram accounts, this study identified the ... more Based on the content analysis of 1,400 Twitter and Instagram accounts, this study identified the social media profiles of 792 Chilean journalists from national media outlets to describe their visibility and activity levels and how they construct their identities. Our results show that although Chilean journalists have a solid digital presence, they use social media platforms differently, displaying various identity creation strategies and new journalistic roles. Our findings also address the media outlets' influence on Chilean journalists' profiles, level of use, and the identities emerging from their social media accounts.

One of the main challenges of studying journalistic roles in social media practice is that the pr... more One of the main challenges of studying journalistic roles in social media practice is that the profession’s conceptual boundaries have become increasingly blurred. Social media has developed as a space used by audiences to consume, share, and discuss news and information, offering novel locations for journalists to intervene at professional and personal levels and in private and public spheres. This article takes the “journalistic ego” domain as its starting point to examine how journalists perform three specific roles on social media: the promoter, the celebrity, and the joker. To investigate these roles in journalistic performance, the article situates their emergence and operationalization in a broader epistemological context, examining how journalists engage with, contest, and/or diverge from different professional norms and practices, as well as the conflict between traditional and social media-specific roles of journalists.

Based on face-to-face, in-depth interviews with 31 Chilean journalists from national TV, radio, p... more Based on face-to-face, in-depth interviews with 31 Chilean journalists from national TV, radio, print, and online media, this study explores how news professionals negotiate their identities and media use on Twitter and Instagram. The results suggest that, overall, they use Twitter and Instagram to stay informed, report the news, engage in branding activities, and interact with their audiences, expanding the scope of their work to include new professional roles and allow for the emergence of different but not mutually exclusive digital selves. Important nuances are found based on the platform used and the journalists’ perceptions of which practices are valid and relevant. Specifically, three analytical approaches to digital selves were identified. While we found strong patterns of a reinterpretation of journalistic practices through the normalization of some traditional functions, which are represented by the “adapted …

The book brings together scholars from Western and Eastern Europe, North America, Latin America, and Asia, reporting findings based on data collected from democratic, transitional, and non-democratic contexts to produce thematic chapters that address how journalistic cultures vary around the globe, specifically in relation to challenges that journalists face in performing their journalistic roles. The study measures, compares, and analyzes the materialization of the interventionist, the watchdog, the loyal-facilitator, the service, the infotainment, and the civic roles in more than 30,000 print news stories from 18 countries. It also draws from hundreds of surveys with journalists to explain the link between ideals, and practices, and the conditions that shape this divide.

Specifically, we seek to examine the influence of journalistic professionalism on the construction of media agendas in two political systems with different degrees of openness. The United States provides an example of open political system in which news media are mostly free from the government influence. The political system of Chile, on the other hand, is characterized by a strong political parallelism in which news media, political parties, and economic powers are firmly linked. In fact, a large percentage of media owners in Chile belong to major political class and economic powers in the country (Monckeberg, 2009).
This chapter starts with a discussion of the concept journalistic role performance. We then introduce an approach to examine how journalistic role performance can potentially shape the media agenda. To identify media agenda patterns, we draw upon the third level of agenda setting theory, the Network Agenda Setting (NAS) Model (Guo & McCombs, 2011a-b; Guo, 2013), to examine the co-existence of different journalistic roles as reflected in the U.S. and Chilean news coverage.

Following a first volume edited by Claudia Mellado, Lea Hellmueller, and Wolfgang Donsbach in 201... more Following a first volume edited by Claudia Mellado, Lea Hellmueller, and Wolfgang Donsbach in 2017, this book presents the second collective publication of the Journalistic Role Performance (JRP) project, a collaborative endeavor bringing together journalism scholars from 18 countries. Drawing on the rich theoretical framework of journalistic roles and functions in society, this study aims to better understand how and why journalists perform different roles and to explain the gap between normative visions and actual practices. Edited by Claudia Mellado, Professor of Journalism at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (Chile), the book is organized in three parts. The first part (three chapters) provides the theoretical arguments that lead the authors to question the link between journalistic norms, perceptions, and practices in an international perspective that, once again in the field of Journalism Studies, calls for "de-westernising" the perspective. The authors also explain how the methodological framework of the JRP project provides a standardization of measurements of different professional roles in print news contents. The second part (four chapters) covers different manifestations of journalistic role performance in the news. It shows how six professional roles (interventionist, watchdog, loyal facilitator, service, civic, and infotainment) materialize in print news in various organizational, institutional, and social settings. In doing so, the authors examine the importance that journalists ascribe to different roles, along with the enactment and performance of each perceived journalistic role. Chapter 7 offers a very interesting focus on the different ways in which journalists approach the audiences. Analyzing how the civic, service, and infotainment roles manifest themselves in news content is particularly relevant, as those roles are less visible, even sometimes absent from normative discourses, hidden as they are by sociopolitical roles. The last part of the book (five chapters) tries to explain the performance of different journalistic roles cross-nationally. The chapters included in this section analyze the influence of various factors that can have an effect on different roles (e.g., the news story, the organizational and societal levels) as well as the link between ideals, reporter behaviors, and professional performance.

It might seem to go without saying, but benefits from saying all the same: it does us all some go... more It might seem to go without saying, but benefits from saying all the same: it does us all some good to read outside our narrow research niches. For myself, Beyond Journalistic Norms provided and rewarded for taking such an opportunity. Beyond Journalistic Norms is the product of Claudia Mellado and seventeen of her colleagues' multi-year Journalism Role Performance (JRP) project. In it, they unfurl their extensive effort to explore journalistic roles and practices around the world, drawing findings from the project's empirical studies into the conversation. The second book from the JRP endeavor (cf. Mellado et al. 2017), Beyond Journalistic Norms, moves through twelve chapters, setting out theoretical foundations and methodological design (Part I: Professional Roles and Journalistic Performance), detailing particular comparative studies that encourage us to understand the nuances of their performance (Part II: The Manifestation of Journalistic Role Performance in the News), and showing how these findings confront extant understandings of how roles play out across and within different media and media systems (Part III: Explaining Journalistic Role Performance). Centering on the performance of journalistic roles, it departs from the interventionist, loyal-facilitator, watchdog, civic, service, and infotainment roles to examine subdimensions of these roles with a stated aim of challenging presumptions of any one role "dominating" in one system or another. What results is a rich set of discussions that allow scholars to find their home in studies that might not naturally cross their transom. In that sense, it reflects the best traditions of academic writing, working in two directions. In the first, it directs readers toward the output of the JRP project, pulling from, without rehashing, published studies to detail approaches, methods, and theoretical foundations. This allows for adopting or adapting as needs must. The second direction is toward those eager to pose alternative questions about journalistic roles, including by reaching beyond the approaches the JRP project employs. It is this latter direction where I found the most purchase, drawn to the provocations brought about in the latter third of this volume. There is inspiration in examining Book Review

Detached or Interventionist? Comparing the Performance of Watchdog Journalism in Transitional, Advanced and Non-democratic Countries

This study proposes the interventionist and the detached orientations to watchdog journalism thro... more This study proposes the interventionist and the detached orientations to watchdog journalism through the conceptual lens of journalistic role performance. Based on a content analysis of 33,640 news stories from sixty-four media outlets in eighteen countries, we measure and compare both orientations across different countries using three performative aspects of monitoring: intensity of scrutiny, voice of the scrutiny, and source of the event. Our findings show that the interventionist approach of watchdog journalism is more likely to be found in democracies with traditionally partisan and opinion-oriented journalistic cultures or experiencing sociopolitical crises. In turn, the detached orientation predominates in democracies with journalistic traditions associated to objectivity. Although both orientations have a lower presence in transitional democracies, the detached watchdog prevails, while in non-democratic countries the watchdog role is almost absent. Our results also reveal that structural contexts of undemocratic political regimes and restricted press freedom are key definers of watchdog role performance overall. However, the type of political regime is actually more important-and in fact the most important predictor-for detached than for interventionist reporting.
