Over the past decade, there has been increased attention given in scholarly research and publications to considerations of discrimination or bias against classes or groups of persons as the subjects of research, the authors of research or the topics of research. COPE is developing a discussion document on how matters of diversity, equity and inclusion relate to publication ethics and editorial decision making. We have already started work on “Best practices around identity and name changes”, with further guidance forthcoming. We are also considering developing guidance for dealing with historical offensive content.
The webinar will be of interest to anyone involved in scholarly research and publishing who are interested in learning more about:
- the impact of discriminatory practices in peer review and editorial decision making
- recommendations for the promotion of social justice and equality within scholarly publishing
- best practices around identity and name changes, including examples of publishers who are implementing name change policies
- dealing with historical offensive content - this will be a discussion item and we invite and encourage your input. Please come prepared with your thoughts and suggestions.
After our speakers present, there will be an opportunity for questions from attendees. You can email your question in advance or ask questions during the webinar.
Speakers
Deborah Poff (she/her) COPE Past-Chair and Trustee, lead on the diversity and inclusivity discussion document. Deborah will introduce some of the issues that will be examined in more depth in a new discussion document on “Diversity and inclusivity”.
Tess Tanenbaum (she/her) is an assistant professor at the University of California in the Department of Informatics. Over the past couple of years, Dr Tanenbaum has played a critical role in advocating for and informing trans inclusive name change policies. She will share the longer term vision and goals around name changes in scholarly publishing.
Rachel Safer (she/her) COPE Council Member and Senior Publisher, Oxford University Press. Rachel will discuss the progress of COPE’s new discussion document on “Best practices around identity and name changes”.
Caroline Porter (she/her) COPE Trustee and Executive Publisher, SAGE Publishing. Caroline will examine the issues around historical offensive content.

There will be time for questions at the end of the webinar and we expect a lively discussion.
The webinar is around issues of diversity, equity and inclusion, and we acknowledge that our panel is not as diverse as we would like, which in itself reflects a lack of diversity within our organisation that we are working to address. We recognise the systemic imbalances within the communities in which we operate (academia, publishing) and wish to play our part in supporting change. We welcome attendees from all backgrounds to participate in this and all our events, and we look forward to learning from the discussion.
