IAMCR 2013 - Diasporas and the Media Working Group - Call for Papers
The IAMCR Diasporas and the Media Working Group invites submissions of abstracts for papers and panel proposals for the IAMCR 2013 conference to be held from 25 to 29 June, 2013 at the Helix Conference Centre at Dublin City University, Ireland (http://iamcr2013dublin.com).
The conference will be held under the general theme, Crises, ‘Creative Destruction’ and the Global Power and Communication Orders. We will consider proposals on any issue within the broader Working Group research areas, but will prioritize proposals relating to the Conference theme addressing questions such as ‘How are diasporic media affected in the current crisis environment?’, ‘What is the role of Diasporic Media and communications networks in an era of rapid change?’ or ‘How do diasporic communities and media respond to the current waves of racism and exclusive politics in crisis-stricken societies?”.
More broadly, as the relationship between diasporas and globalization is enhanced and intensified as a result of the transnationalization of the media, processes of reconfiguration of place, space and culture are set in motion which affect everyday life for diasporic communities, as electronic media, old and new, increasingly link producers and audiences across national boundaries, thus fostering the deterritorialization/ reterritorialization of diasporic identities, and challenging and transforming established notions of the nation-state; of tradition, heritage and citizenship; and of modes of belonging; the Working Group aims to bring together interested researchers to discuss these processes and their broader implications, and to present empirical and theoretical work at the 2013 Conference around the following general themes:
- the interplay of the transnational, translocal & the local in diasporic communications;
- diasporic communications & the making of diasporic identities;
- transnational diasporic communication strategies and practices – we would welcome abstracts exploring this theme in the context of the current crisis and its economic, political and cultural manifestations;
- diasporic audiences & cultural politics;
- diasporic cultural production & consumption;
- integration, cultural separatism & hybridity;
- immigration and the media;
- diasporic media and their place in the community media landscape
- diasporic media and mainstream media
- new research agendas
